What Your BMI Means

Healthy Weight Range for Your Height

A healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9. For your height, this corresponds to a weight between 50.0 kg - 67.4 kg.

BMI Limitations

BMI doesn't directly measure body fat and doesn't account for age, gender, ethnicity, muscle mass, or bone density. Athletes may have a high BMI due to muscle mass, not excess fat.

Consult a Professional

BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic tool. Always consult with healthcare professionals for a complete health assessment.

About BMI Calculator

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using a person's height and weight. The formula is BMI = kg/m² where kg is a person's weight in kilograms and m² is their height in metres squared. A BMI of 25.0 or more is overweight, while the healthy range is 18.5 to 24.9. BMI applies to most adults 18-65 years.

BMI Categories

< 18.5

BMI Formulas

Metric Formula

BMI = weight(kg) / [height(m)]²

Example: For a person who is 170 cm tall and weighs 70 kg:

BMI = 70 / (1.7)² = 70 / 2.89 = 24.2

Imperial Formula

BMI = 703 × weight(lb) / [height(in)]²

Example: For a person who is 5'7" (67 inches) and weighs 154 pounds:

BMI = 703 × 154 / (67)² = 108,262 / 4,489 = 24.1

BMI Limitations

While BMI is a useful screening tool, it has several limitations:

  • Muscle vs. Fat: BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat. Athletes or people with high muscle mass may have a high BMI despite having healthy body fat levels.
  • Age Considerations: BMI may not be as accurate for elderly people who have lost muscle mass.
  • Ethnic Variations: Different ethnic groups may have different body compositions and health risks at the same BMI.
  • Pregnancy: BMI is not applicable during pregnancy.
  • Children and Teens: For children and teens, age and gender-specific growth charts should be used.

Beyond BMI

For a more comprehensive assessment of health, consider these additional measurements:

  • Waist Circumference: Abdominal fat is a better predictor of some health risks than BMI alone.
  • Body Fat Percentage: Directly measures the proportion of fat in your body.
  • Waist-to-Hip Ratio: Indicates how fat is distributed in your body.
  • DEXA Scan: Provides detailed body composition analysis.
